“Ouch,” Daniel’s voice shocked Fenella awake.

She sat up and looked around the dark room. “Are you okay?” she called into the darkness.

“I’m fine,” Daniel replied.

She watched as his shadowy figure walked out of the bathroom.

“I thought the sink was a few paces further from the door than it actually is and I walked right into it. I didn’t want to turn on any lights and risk waking you. It was much better to stand in the bathroom and shout,” he explained.

She laughed. “What time is it?”

“Nearly eight. I woke up at seven and couldn’t get back to sleep. I’ve been lying in bed, trying to decide what do to ever since.”

“You should have woken me.”

“We agreed last night that we weren’t going to rush off anywhere today.”

“Well, I’m awake now. Let’s get ready and go down for some breakfast.”

“That sounds like a plan.”

After breakfast, they headed back downtown. This time, their destination was the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. They spent two hours enjoying the art before making the short journey to the nearby Burchfield Penney Art Center.

“I think our first stop should be the café,” Fenella said as they entered the museum.

“They have a new menu,” the girl behind the ticket counter told her. “Everything is really good.”

“I’m ready for lunch,” Daniel agreed.

A few minutes later, they were sitting together at a table for two in the small café.

“And your luck continues,” Daniel said, nodding toward the door.

Fenella looked up and then sighed. “What are they doing here?”

Hazel looked over and then said something to Sue. A moment later, the pair headed straight for Daniel and Fenella.

“Fancy seeing you here,” Hazel said.

“Hello,” Fenella replied.

“We should get a table together,” Sue suggested. “We didn’t have a chance to catch up properly at the party the other night. We barely even got introduced to your new, um, significant other.”

Fenella looked at Daniel, who shrugged.

“I’m sure no one will mind if we take that table over there,” Sue said, gesturing toward a larger table nearby.

The café was nearly empty, but Fenella was painfully aware that everyone in the place was staring at them.

Hazel seemed to be doing her best to ensure that they’d remain the center of attention as she loudly said, “And we can talk about murder,” as Fenella and Daniel got up from their table.

“I’d rather not,” Fenella said flatly as she took a seat the new table.

“Oh, don’t be that way,” Sue said. “I’ve never been involved in a murder investigation before, but Daniel is a homicide investigator. I’m sure he can tell us everything we need to know about the case.”

“I don’t know anything more than you do,” Daniel protested. “I’m as much on the outside of this case as you are.”

“I don’t believe that,” Hazel told him. “If nothing else, you must be a much better judge of character than we are. You’ll have spoken to hundreds of murderers over the years. You can probably spot them as soon as you see them now.”

“I wish it were that easy,” he replied.
